CTOPP Scoring for Children with Speech Sound Disorders

by Nicole

I am a student giving my first assessment on Monday. I have looked through the CTOPP 2 and TOWRE 2 manuals over and over but I cannot figure out if children who have speech sound errors are scored.

For example, if the child consistently says /f/ for /th/ would they be marked correct or incorrect for saying "free" instead of "three". Since these are not tests of articulation, I would think they would be marked as correct, but I cannot find any evidence for this in the manual or online.

I'm in contact with my supervisor and she wants me to keep looking for evidence so I was hoping reaching out to an SLP would be a good resource.

Thank you!

I am having the same problem! I would like a definitive answer from the CTOPP developers as well!
I have the same thoughts that if the child consistently substitutes a sound she shows she recognizes the need for the sound even though she may not be able to produce it. I will score the CTOPP-3 twice: first without counting those errors as wrong and then again as if they were wrong to see the difference. I will give this information in the report with the associated rationale. When we meet as a team I can have input from other professionals on the team, look at her performance in other areas of her education and then we can make the best decisions for that child.
