Swallowing Problems Are Almost As Common As Falls Among the Elderly
In my opinion...statistics are not as influential as personal experience.
Swallowing problems affect between 6
and 20 million people and accounts for tens of
thousands of deaths in the U.S. each year.
Shocked? This statistic
may not phase you unless...
I assume you're reading this page because you or someone you care about is
part of that 6-20 million who are affected.
My mother passed away in February of 2011 from ALS, better known as Lou
Gherig's disease.
For the last 4-6 months of her life she had difficulty swallowing which
eventually led to her getting a feeding tube because it was too
dangerous for her to eat.
As SLPs, Hollie and I both know strategies, precautions, and even
exercises that can improve swallowing ability and decrease the chance
of choking.
I am grateful for that understanding and for the chances I had to help
my mom...
