Speech Buddies Advice for Speech Errors

by Candy
(Virginia)

I am a stay at home mom that home-schooled 6 children.

Three of them are now either married or in college. The remaining three are 16, 9 and 10.

My 10 year old, Michael is having a difficult time with certain sounds. Specifically, the letter "r" and "r blends". The letter "l",the "th" sound and "w".

I contacted my insurance and therapy is not covered and with two kids in college it just is too expensive. I want to attack these issues here at home and was hoping you can give me some advice.

I was looking at speech buddies.

Do you know anything about them and can you give me some direction in this. I appreciate your making yourselves available to those of us who need advice.

Thank you.

Please contact your local school district. I have worked in the public schools and often had homeschooled kids on my caseload.

The schools will provide those services at no cost, if your child meets the criteria for speech eligibility.

I have used the Speech Buddies tools. they are excellent, especially the tool for the /r/ sound as it helps a child find correct tongue placement for producing the /r/ sound.

I would not advocate a parent buying the tool, however. I believe that they are most useful when used by a trained Speech/Language Pathologist with experience and knowledge in the production of sounds.

Homeschool and speech
by: Danielle

Even though you homeschool your children your local school district can and should provide these other services to you if your child meets criteria.

I work in a public school and currently service 2 homeschool students. This should be provided to you at no cost.

The students just come and see me in the school for their speech sessions and then go back home to complete their schoolwork.

I hope this helps you out!
