S Blends

by Beth

My four and a half year old son does not pronounce the "s" in blends/clusters. Is he too young for me to be worrying about that yet?

It is frustrating for him and for me since I still struggle to understand what he is saying much of the time! (Or "till truggle to undertand.")

Thanks for any input.

(S)top Worrying!
by: Audrey

Have you had his hearing checked?

Fricative sounds like s, z, f can be difficult for children with intermittent ear fluid to discriminate.

Provided that checks out okay, your child is not too young for a speech therapist to target these sounds.

However, he is too young for you to be worrying, or frustrated with him :)

It is more important for a parent to be someone the child feels comfortable and relaxed and free to communicate anything with, without fear of judgment.

Let the speech therapist be the one who makes him work on his sounds!
