Requirements for Becoming an SLP

by Liz
(California)

I am interested in pursuing a career in Speech-Language Therapy, however, I have taken my education a different route.

I have a BA in Psychology and I am currently a MS student focusing on Marriage, Family and Child Therapy. I guess you could say I'm finding a new path.

Will I have to go back to school and get another Bachelors and Masters in order to qualify for Speech-Language Therapy?

Your information is more than appreciated =)

One more thing...

I meant to add: yes, you will need a master's in communication disorders to be an SLP. Sorry, there's no getting around that one, either.

Yes and No

My BA was in Theology, with a minor in Elementary Education.

I needed about 21 hours of additional undergrad classes (including some extra math and science you might not have to take) before I could be accepted into a master's program.

I applied to several universities (5) and they all had different requirements, though. The one I chose to attend made me take a class in diagnostics the summer before I began their program, which none of the other 4 universities required.

So, while you don't have to get a 2nd BA degree, you do have to take all the undergrad speech classes you didn't get while you were getting your psych degree.

You won't be able to get into a communication disorders masters program without them. Research the schools you're interested in and find out their particular pre-req requirements and start plugging away!

Good luck!

Depends on the school...

I would say it all depends on the school.

A BS in psych is probably fine (actually great background for an SLP), but you would definitely have to take all the undergraduate classes that you are missing in communicative disorders education to be able to apply to graduate school for your Masters.
